When we speak of the regency period, the immediate reaction is one of sophisticated charms and English elegance. It was during the Regency that many changes were taking place in England, with the Industrial Revolution set rolling and people migrating into the cities, leaving behind their farming ways. It was also a period when Australia was colonized with the transportation of convicts from England. The Regency period starts from 1911 to 1820 with George IV, stepping in as the Prince Regent to rule on behalf of George III, who was declared unfit to rule as he was a sick man. It was into this period that great writers and poets began to voice out the true picture of that particular time in history. Jane Austen, the famous writer who had published several novels, which are read as great pieces of literature even today, lived in the English countryside during the Regency period. The inspiration for Jane Austen Jane Austen’s social commentaries however did not extend to the actually troubled and bleak affairs of that period but rather focused on the charms of the undefiled countryside. She lived in the countryside from where she churned out her literary masterpieces, focusing more on the simple and hierarchical superficiality of English social fabrics. She approached much of her writing from this hierarchical perspective and as such, you get to glimpse only the inner workings of refined society rather than all the confusions of that period. During most of her early years as well as her adult years, England was always at war with France except for brief lulls in between. This is how Jane mentions the appearance of sailors into her work, such as in ‘Persuasion’ and ‘Mansfield Park’, as the war had some direct effect upon her and her family. Her brothers were in some way or the other directly involved in the war as officers, which must have given her enough thoughts on these circumstances and worked its way into her novels. Jane Austen might have lived in the quiet countryside but she got to learn more about the greater world through her brothers, who had traveled widely and even participated in the Napoleonic wars. She was able to visit London where her brother Henry lived and did all the genteel things, like visiting art galleries, attending theater and social events. She also experienced the privileged life of landed gentry when she visited Godmersham, her brother Edward’s inherited estate from wealthy cousins whose heir he had become. These genteel aspects of life are all mentioned in her novels which deal mostly with finding partners for marriage. Her novels reflect the fashion, etiquette, entertainment, past time and leisure as well as the cuisine of that period. Jane Austen’s inborn talent for writing Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 as the seventh child to George and Cassandra Austen, at the Steventon Rectory in Hampshire. Her father was a humble clergy man but never denied Jane the chance to have education and to learn from his extensive library at the Rectory. She began to write as a child and these pieces of work are now referred to as the Juvenilia. Her first piece of mature work was at 19 and titled, ‘Lady Susan’ in epistolary form which was not published until after her death by her family. She has to her credit novels like, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice’ which she wrote when she was in her 20s. These novels were published in 1811 and 1813 respectively. She published ‘Mansfield Park’ in 1814 and ‘Emma’ in 1815 and these novels mentioned in the title pages, the previous works of Jane to imply her growing popularity although her name was provided. There was only a hint that these novels were written “by a lady” in the title page. By the time she finished writing, ‘Persuasion’, she was already very frail and sick but she continued working on the fragments of ‘Sanditon’. By March 1817, she was too ill to work and had to stop, finally succumbing to her illness which has been assumed as Addison’s Disease on July 18, 1817. Her brief span of life was altogether 41 years and she was buried at Winchester Cathedral. The novels, ‘Persuasion’ and ‘Northanger Abbey’ were published by her brother Henry in December 1817, where in a “Biographical Notice”, Henry mentioned that she was the author of ‘Sense and Sensibility’, ‘Pride and Prejudice’, ‘Mansfield Park’ and ‘Emma’. Jane Austen’s novels set in the Regency period must be read through the eyes of that period, since the reader otherwise may not be able to identify the behavior of her characters. Her novels are not just mere romantic interludes but she uses satire and caricature, to subtly convey the life of that era. Her focus is mainly on the upper classes and the upper middle classes to which, she herself belonged and her characters portray the very social tones of that time. Everybody who had taken literature at college level or even studied the abridged versions of Jane Austen’s novels at High School, have all enjoyed her works and the social messages conveyed in satirical style.
